Standards for Vehicle Fuel Sales (Gas Stations)

In all applicable City of Raleigh districts, gas stations must adhere to dimensional and operational standards to mitigate impacts on the public right-of-way and adjacent residential areas.

Neighborhood Mixed Use (NX-) Restrictions

If a gas station in the NX- District is located within 200 feet of a Residential District, it must meet these additional City of Raleigh requirements:

  • Lot Width: Must be at least 100 feet wide.
  • Location: Must be within 300 feet of an intersection involving a Mixed Use or Major Street.
  • Hours of Operation: Limited to 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM for fuel sales and related deliveries.
  • Service Capacity: No more than 8 vehicles may be serviced simultaneously.
  • Equipment: All vacuum and compression machines must be at least 50 feet from a Residential District and cannot exceed a noise level of 55 dB(A).
  • Lighting: Fuel canopy lighting must be flush-mounted [Sec. 6.4.11.D.3].

Standards for Auto Repair and Body Shops

Raleigh identifies "Minor Repair" as including quick-lube facilities, tire sales, and glass replacement. "Major Repair" encompasses transmission, muffler, and body shops [Sec. 6.5.6.C-D].

Operational Requirements

  • Outdoor Storage: In the City of Raleigh, overnight outdoor storage of vehicles awaiting repair is permitted if screened according to Article 7.5 (Outdoor Display and Storage).
  • Salvage and Impounds: Dismantling vehicles for salvage is strictly prohibited. The storage of impounded vehicles is not permitted at these facilities.
  • Acoustics: No outside speaker systems are allowed.
  • NX- Specifics: For minor repairs in the NX- District, the facility is limited to a maximum of two service bay doors (max 24 feet wide each) located on no more than two sides of the building. These doors must remain closed except for vehicle ingress and egress [Sec. 6.5.6.C-D].
