Off-Street Parking Standards for the UE: Uptown Edge Zoning District

Commercial Parking Requirements

Commercial developments within the City of Charlotte's UE: Uptown Edge Zoning District generally have no minimum requirement but are subject to the following maximums:

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

In the UE: Uptown Edge Zoning District, EV stations are required for multi-family stacked dwellings, the residential component of mixed-use developments, hotels, and principal use parking lots/structures [Section 19.3.A].

Bicycle Parking

Bicycle parking is required for new construction or significant expansions in the UE: Uptown Edge Zoning District. For multi-family stacked or attached dwellings (not on sublots), the requirement is one space per five dwelling units, with 80% required to be long-term (covered/secure) spaces. Most commercial uses require one space per 1,500 square feet of GFA, with 25% designated as long-term spaces [Table 19-3].

Location and Design Standards

The UE: Uptown Edge Zoning District maintains strict standards for where parking may be placed on a lot to preserve the urban character of the City of Charlotte:

  • Primary Frontage Setback: Surface parking is strictly prohibited within any required setback. Additionally, all surface parking must be located a minimum of 25 feet behind the setback line along any primary frontage [Table 19-4].
  • Travel Aisles: Vehicle travel aisles are prohibited in the established setback along a frontage [Table 19-4].
  • Backing Prohibitions: For nonresidential uses and multi-family stacked dwellings, parking configurations that require vehicles to back directly onto a street are prohibited [Section 19.5.D].
  • Surfacing: All parking lots must be improved with a hard surface such as concrete or asphalt, though gravel may be allowed in limited circumstances [Section 19.6.B].
